Easy Ways to Stay Happy and Healthy During Quarantine

During times such as these, it is easy to forget the importance's of productivity. Even whilst being stuck at home, there is so much we can do to stay healthy, active, and most importantly, happy. Recently, I have come to the conclusion that for me, lack of stimulation, unhealthy eating, lack of exercise, and sleep deprivation, are a few contributing factors that make me feel worse about quarantine (and myself). Adding structure and routines during these stressful chaotic times, aids in most peoples’ ability to cope, deal with stress, and builds a positive mindset (which is needed in times such as these). Mental health is one of the most important things to maintain, and it’s especially important right now.
Since the mandated shelter in place order, depression and self-harm rates have dramatically increased. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, “Nearly half (45%) of adults in the U.S. reported that their mental health has been negatively impacted due to the worry and stress over the virus.” This stress and anxiety can be eased when we take care of ourselves. Because we can not fix the problem, in order to feel better mentally, all we can do is better our mindsets through self care practices.
Here are a few health and self care suggestions that worked for me (self care differs person to person, it’s okay if these don’t work for you!)
Creating a schedule was a decision that ended up relieving so much of my stress. Knowing what I have to complete each day, and having it organized and in front of me helped me complete all my work on time, and feel productive and confident.
Personally, I love having a daily routine. Since we don’t have the weekly routine of school, it’s important to create one for yourself. When following a routine I always feel a sense of accomplishment, along with the pride of being productive.
8+ Hours of Sleep
Sleep deprivation is real, and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule is more important than you think. The amount of sleep you get plays a large role in your daily emotions, anxiety, productivity, etc. Getting enough sleep will aid in many things, such as your cognitive capacity, immune system, clear thinking, and overall health.
Our immune systems are our greatest defense against Flu's and viruses such as COVID-19. Keeping a healthy balanced diet is one of the best ways to maintain good health. For example, one thing that I’ve been doing during this shelter in place, is making myself vitamin-packed smoothies each morning. Including ingredients such as fresh spinach, pineapple, mango, plus oat, coconut, or almond milk, agave syrup, and spirulina. This green smoothie is energizing, and full of vitamins an d nutrients.
Staying away from heavy carbs, corn syrup, and a lot of sugar, is one thing that will benefit your mental, physical, and Immunol health.
While being stuck inside, it may be easy to forget to exercise. However, getting outside and exercising plays a large role in our focus, confidence, and stamina. As of now, many have started living a sedentary lifestyle. While most should be getting their heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day to maintain a healthy build, stay focused during online school, and for just overall happiness and well being. Exercising is another thing that will add to the feeling of being productive.
Organization and Cleanliness
In my opinion, one of the best ways to relieve anxiety and feel productive is to clean up my living space. When my room is clean and organized, I notice myself feeling more confident about myself.
For me personally, an ideal happy healthy day in quarantine would include waking up around 8:00 A.M., eating a healthy breakfast, completing a good portion of my work for the week, going on a long run, taking a warm shower, helping my family with chores, facetiming a few of my friends, possibly complete a bit more work, helping with dinner, having family time, and then being asleep by 10:30. Everyone's ideal happy healthy day will differ depending on what is most important to them. But hopefully at least a few of these suggestions are helpful in making sure you stay happy and healthy at home!
