Modders Manual #1: Stardew Valley
Updated: May 22
Stardew Valley: A game about farming, mining, fighting, and having a good time. But let's say you have played the game a lot and are getting bored, or you need to record a video but don't want to do a whole bunch of work to get an end-game item just for the 10-minute vid. Mods have you covered! This is a guide on how to get mods, and the best ones to have.
What you will need: Stardew Valley and SMAPI mod loader.
How to get SMAPI:
Go to SMAPI.io, click Download SMAPI, and then Direct Download. Once you have downloaded it, open the Zipped folder and there will be four different files. A folder named internal, a file named install on Linux, and the same for Windows and Mac. Double click the file that corresponds to your platform, and a window will open with the text, "If you are installing SMAPI press 1 and then enter. If you are removing SMAPI press 2 and then enter." Obviously we are installing so press 1 and then enter. Once you have installed SMAPI, there will be a line of text that reads (This is an example, yours will not be exactly the same!) "C : \Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\StardewModdingAPI.exe" %command%. Copy and paste the WHOLE line from the first quotation mark to the final percent sign. Now, navigate to Steam and right-click Stardew valley in your library. Click "Properties" and then "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS" and paste the line you copied into the text box that pops up. And there you go! Now we have . . .
How to get mods:
You will now automatically have a mods folder in your Stardew folder. Almost ALL the mods you will ever get will be on Nexus Mods. Once you have downloaded a mod, it will come as a Zipped Folder. Now all you have to do is open it, and drag and drop the contents into the mods folder!
A future article will list some of the best mods for Stardew Valley.
